The Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine provided updates for its members on Friday, July 30, 2021. The updates are found in the SMFM clinical guidance found here and in its patient education materials found here.
The updates address those who are pregnant, recommending them to be vaccinated against COVID-19. To maintain consistency across organizations, ACOG has also updated its recommendations.
Changes were made primarily because:
• data suggests that vaccination is safe and effective for pregnant people;
• only 22.7% of pregnant people are currently vaccinated;
• emerging data suggest that a strong recommendation from providers can make a meaningful difference in the decision to vaccinate; and
• community spread is increasing due to the Delta variant.
The CDC states that it is safe for pregnant individuals to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. SMFM hopes that practices would encourage their patients to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
