What is a Maternal Fetal Medicine Physician?

Maternal-fetal Medicine

A Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist has completed residency training for 4 years in Obstetrics and Gynecology. They have then completed an additional 2 to 3 years of education and clinical experience in the care of pregnant women and her fetus. This extra training is spent developing special expertise in the use of ultrasound to better evaluate the fetus and in the performance of other procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of the fetus. In addition, knowledge is gained in the optimal care of pregnant women with pre-existing medical problems and complications of pregnancy.

Maternal-Fetal Medicine Physicians may provide consultation to or partner with an obstetrician in the care of a pregnant woman before, during, or after their pregnancy. They may occasionally provide complete obstetric management and delivery in certain situations. Genetic Counselors and Certified Diabetes Educators, Sonographers and Nurses are part of the team providing care in our practice. The Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist may also work with other physicians including Medical Specialists and Pediatric Specialists such as Pediatric Surgeons and Neonatologists to facilitate the best possible outcomes.

The uniqueness of the specialty of Maternal-Fetal Medicine is in the management of two patients at once – the pregnant mother and the fetus. There are no absolute indications for consultation with a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist. Possible indications include diabetes, hypertension, lupus, heart disease, or other medical problems which may affect the pregnancy. Fetal complications such as structural abnormalities, poor growth, and multiple gestations may be indications for advanced ultrasound expertise.

A few of the many other reasons to seek the assistance of a Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialist include: previous pregnancy losses, family history of genetic disorders or structural abnormalities, advanced maternal age, maternal infections or Rh isoimmunization, or pregnancies achieved with assisted reproductive technology.

We provide compassionate, patient-centered care in a family environment. We utilize advanced technology to create a lasting partnership between the patient, their family, the referring provider and our team.
